After alerting the public to the fact that National Fuel, Western New York’s largest provider of residential home heating gas, had overcharged customers by millions of dollars – the National Fuel Accountability Coalition (NFAC) today announces that relief is on the way. PUSH and NFAC will be joined by elected officials at today’s announcement.
National Fuel Gas (NFG) has reached a $10 million dollar settlement with the Public Service Commission. Details of the settlement will be made public today when community members, state and local officials gather for a press conference at 4pm.
A portion of the settlement monies will help to fund weatherization programs in Western New York. Another portion will be rebated to customers.
“This was a situation that was flying under the community’s radar. Once we found out that NFG was over charging its Buffalo area customers, we knew we had to do something” says Brenda Miller an Organizer with PUSH Buffalo. “This is money that will go to more weatherization in not only the city of Buffalo, but throughout Western New York as well. We worked and we continue to work to hold NFG accountable to get regular people a seat at the table” she continued.
The NFAC first brought this issue to light in June when it joined with Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant and others in calling for a “Big Payback”. NFAC, PUSH and elected officials joined PUSH and NFAC in proposing placing settlement money into a fund to promotes weatherization and job creation.
“It’s welcome news and this is a battle victory, but we’re in a long-term struggle to ensure energy efficiency is within reach for everyone in Western New York. What we have been talking about this entire time is forming a more cohesive community partnership. Holding big energy companies accountable means nothing without creating and taking advantage of progressive community based solutions” says Aaron Bartley Executive Director of PUSH Buffalo.
The National Fuel Accountability Coalition (NFAC) is a group of community based organizations who have been working to shed light on the weatherization crisis in Buffalo and Western New York. They are gathering at 460 Massachusetts Avenue in Buffalo NY at 4pm (today) Friday December 6th to announce National Fuel Gas’ $10 million settlement with Buffalo and Western New York.
