We won! Buffalos own Green Development Zone, developed by PUSH Buffalo and other partner non-profits, was declared a winner of the international Sustainable Urban Housing Competition on April 13th, 2011. The competition was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of State, and the American Planning Association.
After the Green Development Zone was declared one of eleven Finalists (from a total of 289 entries submitted from 48 different countries), Western New Yorkers showed their incredible support for homegrown solutions by voting for the Green Development Zone in a two week online voting competition . Thank you so much to everyone who voted for us!
Buffalos Green Development Zone will be awarded a prize of $10,000 to be used to continue our work in the Zone. As a winner, well also be recognized in Washington, DC by numerous public and private partners. This is an incredible opportunity for us to elevate community control of resources in the Zone as a solution to the economic, housing, and energy crisis facing our neighborhoods.
We celebrated our victory at our Net Zero House at 10 Winter St, slated to be completed early this summer, with PUSH members, staff, and friends! A special thank you to Mitch for emceeing the event and to Bill OConnell from HUD, our Council Member David Rivera, Tom Van Nortwick from the NYS DHCR, and the Center for Working Families for their support of our efforts. And the work to control community resources continues...
We couldnt be more pleased about our Green Development Zone being recognized, but we still have plenty of work to do to carry out our vision and bring it up to scale. So later that day, we got over 100 residents of the Zone together at the Butler-Mitchell for a Community Planning Congress. PUSH leaders Bob C, Linda, Rosey, Mike, Bob M, Terry, Suzanne, Shawn, Julie, Alba, James, Mitch, and Brenda led residents on tours around our Zone to share details about some of the different projects and their impacts on folks lives. The residents who attended were energized by the work going on in their community and got right to work letting us know what it all means to them. At PUSH, we believe that people know what they need where they live
! We want the Green Development Zone to be a model for connecting those ideas to real housing and community development. Check out more pictures
from our Congress!
